www.chinabuses.org: The Weihai city in Shandong Province has already built 22 charging poles around the city and its first EV charging and battery-swapping station is about to be launched at the end of May, but few electric vehicles have been running on the roads, reported chinasmartgrid.com.cn.

The 22 charging poles were finished last May and they can serve 132 EVs each day.

The first charging station in the city has 14 charging poles. It can provide battery-swapping service for 30 electric buses and some electric sedans.

It is reported that the short-term investment in charging and battery-swapping stations has reached ¥21 million ($3.3 million).

But all the charging facilities seem too excessive for the city’s electric vehicles. There used to be three electric buses running in the city but after operation for half a year, these buses were returned to the factory. What left for demonstrative operation in the city are five electric cars and some low-speed electric vehicles.

Lv Xuegui, one of the city’s members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, strongly suggested Weihai should apply for the country’s new energy vehicle pilot program so that fleet operations of electric buses in the city can be propelled as purchase cost will be reduced provided the government subsidies.
