Over the next few years, Robert Bosch GmbH intends to shift more of its European purchasing volume, which is currently overwhelmingly reliant on European suppliers, to Asia and the Americas.

In 2007, the most recent year for which data is available, 69 percent of Bosch's purchasing volume came from Europe. By 2015, Europe's share is expected to shrink to about 55 percent.

"At that point, we want to source 25 percent in the Asia/Pacific region and about 20 percent in the Americas," a source at Bosch said.

The change is in line with the supplier's strategic goal of deriving half of its corporate revenues from the Americas and Asia by 2015. Currently, 65 percent of Bosch's sales are in Europe, 17 percent in Asia and 18 percent in the Americas.

In 2007, the company's total purchasing volume was 24 billion euros.

In line with the geographic shift, Bosch is expanding its global oversight. A new committee at its headquarters and regional contacts will track compliance with guidelines such as the labor standards of the International Labor Organization and Bosch's general environmental requirements.

Robert Bosch GmbH, of Stuttgart, Germany, ranked first on the Automotive News list of the top 100 global suppliers with parts sales to automakers of $36.16 billion in 2007.
