On July 3, 2025, it was learned that the Indonesian nickel resource and battery industry chain project, jointly invested by a consortium comprising CBL (a subsidiary of CATL), Indonesian state-owned mining company ANTAM, and Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), held a groundbreaking ceremony in Indonesia. With a total future investment of nearly $6 billion, the project is planned to produce enough batteries annually to power 200,000 to 300,000 electric vehicles and will further expand into the energy storage sector.

Indonesian President Prabowo, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong, Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif, Indonesian Minister of State-owned Enterprises Erick Thohir, and CATL co-founder and deputy chairman Li Ping attended and witnessed the ceremony.

The project covers a total planned area of over 2,000 hectares, including nickel mining and smelting in East Halmahera, North Maluku, battery material manufacturing and battery recycling, as well as battery manufacturing in Karawang, West Java. Among them, the first phase of the Karawang battery factory has a planned production capacity of 6.9GWh. Relying on cutting-edge technologies such as AI, 5G, and digital twins, it will be built to the standard of CATL's lighthouse factory to produce high-quality battery products and accelerate the process of electric mobility and energy transition in Indonesia and globally.

Li Ping pointed out that the project integrates key links from minerals to battery materials, and then to battery manufacturing and recycling, unblocking the entire life cycle of the battery industry chain. "The project will inject strong momentum into Indonesia's green economic transition towards net-zero carbon emissions."

As a global leading new energy innovation technology company, CATL will also help Indonesia establish its first local renewable energy recycling system through Brunp's directed recycling technology (DRT technology). The project will also use advanced technologies and renewable energy to achieve ultra-low energy consumption and realize the regeneration of high-value battery materials with a metal recycling rate of over 95%. After full production, it is expected to produce 142,000 tons of nickel per year, 30,000 tons of positive electrode materials, and have the capacity to process about 20,000 tons of waste batteries.

Indonesian President Prabowo said at the groundbreaking ceremony: "This is an extremely important and mutually beneficial cooperation, and it is also a large-scale and breakthrough project. Through this project, we will be able to produce renewable and environmentally friendly energy that the whole world is pursuing." According to Indonesia's prediction, after the project is fully put into production, it will create 8,000 direct jobs and 35,000 indirect employment opportunities.
