On May 10, 2025, a fleet of 300 Zhongtong high-tech pure electric buses, manufactured in China, successfully arrived in Chile. These buses will join the existing fleet of 2,555 pure electric buses operating in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, collectively injecting green momentum into the local public transportation system.
The consignment of pure electric buses was unloaded at the Port of San Antonio in the Valparaíso region. This marks the first batch of deliveries from a total order of 1,800 buses. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of public transportation services and effectively reduce environmental pollution caused by diesel engine emissions.
The Chilean Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications stated that once all these Chinese pure electric buses are put into operation, the proportion of electric vehicles in the RED public transport system of the capital region will rise to 68%. This will lay a solid foundation for creating a more environmentally friendly and efficient public transportation network.
Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz of the Ministry emphasized that they are sparing no effort to promote the adoption of electric vehicle technology across various sectors, with the goal of achieving broader green mobility.
The new Zhongtong buses are equipped with multiple innovative technologies, including built-in safety cameras, USB ports, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a blind spot sensor system. These features provide passengers with a safer and more convenient travel experience.
Paula Tapia, the Director of the Santiago Metropolitan Region's Transportation Department, pointed out that the RED public transport system in the Santiago region currently accounts for only 3.3% of traffic pollution emissions. This makes a significant contribution to reducing environmental noise. With the addition of more pure electric buses, this proportion is expected to decrease further.
It is worth mentioning that on March 26, 2025, Zhongtong Bus held a departure ceremony for the first batch of 895 pure electric buses exported to Chile. This represents the largest single-batch order of Chinese buses exported to Chile in recent years and underscores Zhongtong Bus's strong presence in the international market.
Looking back, Zhongtong Bus's cooperation with Chile has already yielded fruitful results. As early as 2021 and 2022, Zhongtong's H12Plus premium pure electric tourist buses were delivered to Chile in succession. These buses provided robust support for commuting in the country's copper mining areas. In 2023, 40 Zhongtong pure electric buses were put into operation in the Chilean city of Antofagasta. In May 2024, witnessed by the President of Chile, Zhongtong's N-series pure electric buses were delivered in bulk to the city of Rancagua. And in 2025, Zhongtong's H12Plus premium pure electric tourist buses were once again exported to Chile in large quantities. With their outstanding performance and quality, they successfully entered the Chilean tourism and commuting market.
In summary, Zhongtong's new energy buses have already assumed a pivotal role in multiple passenger transport sectors in Chile. With the bulk delivery of these 300 pure electric buses, Zhongtong Bus's "green" footprint in Chile will expand further, continuing to drive the local transition towards green transportation.
