Following Stockholm, Oslo and The Hague the Irish capital Dublin is yet another European metropolis that has decided in favour of INIT technology to manage its bus network. Dublin Bus, Dublin’s largest public transport provider, has opted for the introduction of a telematics system from INIT.

With the implementation of the Intermodal Transport Control System MOBILE-ITCS dispatchers maintain the overview over the traffic situation in Dublin at all times and can initiate counter measures should disturbances occur. They will be supported by MOBILE-ITCS, as well as a unique portfolio of service restoration measures. Not only will the system display the current positions of the vehicles to the dispatchers, this real-time information will also be used to dynamically calculate the passenger information. For this purpose an open system based on a platform independent of the ITCS will be implemented, that enables the integration of further bus operators—the so-called Multi-Operator Real-Time Passenger Information System (MO/RTPI). The integrated dynamic passenger information system calculates departure times reliably and provides the information in suitable format for various media, e.g. the Web, mobile telephones and wayside displays. Dublin Bus also opted for the real-time information at bus stops; so that passengers may know in the future when the next scheduled service will arrive, INIT will equip 1,000 bus stops with LED displays. Under the recently signed contract INIT will not only install a state-of-the-art, multi-client-capable Intermodal Transport Control System (MOBILE-ITCS), it will also equip Dublin Bus’ 1,200 vehicles with the corresponding vehicle technology. The driver interface supports the driver with easy-to-view and fast information, as well as the possibility of ergonomic operation of the ITCS functions. In addition, some buses (150) will also be equipped with LED displays which offer excellent readability, even in poor lighting conditions. For the communication between the vehicles and the control centre Dublin Bus has opted for an intelligent new solution: the TNDS Data Transmission Module. Dublin Bus’ services are frequented by around 150 million passengers each year. The transport company intends to use the INIT solution to optimise its operations, especially the regulation of bus services across the entire city. In addition, the new system will improve the efficiency of the vehicle management and thus reduce operating costs, whilst the passenger information system will offer the citizens and visitors of Dublin reliable real-time arrival and departure information at bus stops.
