www.chinabuses.org: The combined production capacity of power batteries is expected to hit 170Gwh in 2017, six times larger than the current demand. It is estimated that such a production capacity is fully able to meet the demand for producing 500,000 units electric buses and five million electric passenger vehicles. However, such a large annual production volume of electric vehicles can hardly be achieved in the next couple of years.

The world new energy vehicle market is now witnessing some big changes, shifting from the increase of numbers to the improvement of quality. “The most pressing task faced by China’s new energy vehicle industry, is not to increase its production capacity, not to expand to new power battery market, but to improve the core competitiveness of some power battery manufacturers, including their core technologies and brand image”, says Wang Zidong, Director of the Power Battery Lab of China North Vehicle Research Institute.

In the past few years, the subsidies offered by governments at various levels have indeed pushed the expansion of the production volume, but they failed to generate significant impacts on technological advances. In 2017, under the new regulations, enterprises are all facing a hard time unless they take immediate measures to improve the quality and overall competitiveness of their products. How to survive and prosper at this critical moment? Mr. Wang points out that enterprises must find effective ways to increase the continuous driving distances of vehicles, improve the life-expectancy of batteries, cut the weight of vehicles and their purchasing costs and enhance the flexibility and adaptability of vehicles.
