The organization has a total of 30 blood collection vehicles which are dispatched to more than 30 collection points in urban areas, including Wangfujing, Xidan and downtown railway stations. Allison T280 and T310 transmissions with retarders provide Continuous Power Technology ™, smoothly transferring engine power to the wheels. This helps meet the intensive demands of stop-start driving in dense traffic, reducing driver fatigue and distractions while protecting the sensitive cargo from unnecessary vibrations.
Previous blood collection vehicles were equipped with manual transmissions. However, the high intensity duty cycles resulted in clutch wear and frequent failures which made the vehicles difficult to maintain. Delays due to an accident or breakdown not only meant lower productivity and road congestion, they could also affect the quality of donated blood.
The Beijing Red Cross Blood Center first began using two Allison-equipped blood collection vehicles in March 2011. After 10,000 km of service, failure and accident rates were reduced to zero and the vehicle’s reliability was proven.
Allison transmissions won favor among management, operators and technicians due to their quality, ease of operation and a customer-focused service network. As a result, the organization began ordering additional Allison-equipped vehicles in 2012.
